Cape Town<\/strong>\u00a0(Afrikaans<\/a>:\u00a0Kaapstad<\/em>\u00a0[\u02c8k\u0251\u02d0pst\u0250t]<\/a>;\u00a0Xhosa<\/a>:\u00a0iKapa<\/em>) is the second-most populous city in\u00a0South Africa<\/a>\u00a0after\u00a0Johannesburg<\/a>, and the provincial capital and\u00a0primate city<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Western Cape<\/a>. As the seat of the\u00a0National Parliament<\/a>, it is also the legislative capital of the country. It forms part of the\u00a0City of Cape Town<\/a>\u00a0metropolitan municipality<\/a>. The city is famous for\u00a0its harbour<\/a>\u00a0as well as its natural setting in the\u00a0Cape floral kingdom<\/a>, including such well-known landmarks as\u00a0Table Mountain<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Cape Point<\/a>. Cape Town is also Africa’s most popular tourist destination.<\/p>\n

Located on the shore of\u00a0Table Bay<\/a>, Cape Town was originally developed by the\u00a0Dutch East India Company<\/a>\u00a0as a victualling (supply) station for Dutch ships sailing to Eastern Africa, India, and the Far East.\u00a0Jan van Riebeeck<\/a>‘s arrival on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in South Africa. Cape Town quickly outgrew its original purpose as the first European outpost at theCastle of Good Hope<\/a>, becoming the economic and cultural hub of the\u00a0Cape Colony<\/a>. Until theWitwatersrand Gold Rush<\/a>\u00a0and the development of\u00a0Johannesburg<\/a>, Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa. Today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and\u00a0expatriates<\/a>\u00a0to South Africa. As of 2011\u00a0the metropolitan region had an estimated population of 3.74\u00a0million.<\/p>\n

The city was named the\u00a0World Design Capital<\/a>\u00a0for 2014 by the\u00a0International Council of Societies of Industrial Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n
